Annual ten-day teaching support in the MA Spatial Design program. The aim was to provide students with the opportunity to review and develop their design concept through the introduction of structure and material. They should develop the ability to control the interaction between perception - the power of vision and imagery - and the materiality of a building - the expression of technique - between appearance and structure and between image and detail.
Lectures
Image and Structure: Examples will be used to show how the internal order of the construction methods influences the design result and what expressive potential the relationship between the spaces and the building components can have.

Image and Detail: Corners, edges and openings are places that shape the appearance of a façade or building. Examples will be used to show how designers can retain control over the expression of their design despite the countless technical demands.

Exemplary Design process focusing on Image & Structure
The following pages document an exemplary process that took place as part of the assisted design develoment focusing on Image & Structure in the MA program Spatial Design at the University of Art and Design, Helsinki (January 25 - February 3, 2005).
Student Salla Kantokorpi worked on the further development of her project design, which she had submitted to Tampere University of Technology.
Based on this design, she developed a structural system that preserved the image of the façade floating above ground. In turn working on the development of her design helped her clarify unresolved issues in her spatial design.  → Mehr...

Remarks to the projects materialised during the Image & Structure, Image & Detail course in the Spatial Design MA-program at the University of Art and Design, Helsinki (25. January to 3. February 2005). The course focused on the relationship between ideas, concepts and realisation - and so do the remarks.
