The structural system selected determines the possible location and size of openings and is thus an important limitation for enclosures, circulation and utility systems.
← Original design
The circulation determines the relationship between different rooms and leads to a hierarchical organization of the spaces and to a zoning within the building volume. Circulation produces spaces as part of a sequence as well as spaces with their own identities. Circulation controls, together with the mechanical and utility systems, the section through their vertical and horizontal connecting elements. Through its demand for exceptions, the development of a circulation system influences strongly the design of the supporting structure.
Exploring the rules for arranging openings in the primary support structure and their influence on circulation and spatial quality.
The further steps in the design process will now be the completion of the continuous dialogue between structural components and space layout – now with the knowledge of a set of rules – and secondly the focus on the relation between image and detail.
